Ernest A. Coleman Ii
Ernest A. Coleman II (Ernie), age 86 passed away on March 17, 2016 at Willow Valley Communities in Willow Street Pa. He is survived by his loving wife Ann (nee Royer), son David (wife Heidi and children Kristina and David Jr.)daughter Donna (husband Jeffrey Mumford and daughter Blythe), one great grandchild, and sister Anita Butler and her descendants. He was pre-deceased by his parents Del Rey and Rozelle Weed Coleman and sister Audrey Coleman.
Ernie received his BS in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute and, after serving in the US Navy for two years , his PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. His long and varied career included working for DuPont, Union Carbide, Norton, and the Library of Congress. In 1986 he became an independent consultant with expertise in engineering plastics, plastics additives and modifiers, ceramics, earning approximately 50 patents throughout his career.
Ernie was constantly focused on mentoring other scientists and students of all ages, and furthering scientific research and development worldwide. To that end he was an active member of many professional groups including the American Association for the advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, Association of Consulting Chemists and Chemical Engineers (Council Member),and Society of Plastics Engineers (starting the Polymer Modifiers and Additives Division and chairing many of its committees).
For many years he and Ann cared for orphaned and injured wildlife. Since retiring he has enjoyed playing and teaching bridge, and earned his national Life Master designation. Even in death Ernie continues to serve mankind by the donation of his body to the Humanity Gift Registry for the education of future physicians.
A memorial service will be held st Spring Run in Willow Valley Communities on Saturday April 16, 2016 at 3 p.m. Friends may greet the family beginning at 2 p.m.
