Almira (Allie) Veghte Shaffer, 93, a resident of Willow Valley Manor North, Lancaster, PA, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 at her residence.
Born in Griggstown, NJ, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Cora Davis Veghte. She was a graduate of Somerville, NJ public schools and Rider College (now University) in NJ.
Allie was employed as a medical secretary at American Cyanamid Co. in Bound Brook, NJ after graduating college. In 1951, she and her husband Russell founded Shaffer Products, a corporation fabricating and selling filtration products for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. She became Secretary-Treasurer of the Corporation until her retirement in 1989.
She was a life member of South Branch Reformed Church, Hillsborough, NJ, where she served as Treasurer of the Guild for Christian Service for many years. She was also very active in various other functions of the Church. After moving to Lancaster in 1994, she attended First United Methodist Church here until her death.
She was preceded in death by her son, Russell I., Jr., and infant daughter, Cynthia Gail, and then in 2005 by her husband of 69 years. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Johnson Auditorium at Willow Valley Manor North, 600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 10:30 AM. The family will visit with friends following the service. Interment will be in New Cemetery, Somerville, NJ on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 2 PM.
