Anna B. Hume

Anna B. Hume, age 94, went to be with her Lord September 24, 2016, after a very brief illness. She passed away in her home that she loved so much at the Mayflower Retirement Community in Winter Park, FL. She was born on her mother’s birthday on March 31, 1922, to Ernest L. and Esther Y. (Peters) Bertram in Lancaster, PA. She was married to her beloved husband Chester E. (Chet) Hume on January 1, 1978, in Lancaster, PA. Anna often said, “Chet was the love of my life.” She always said that the 6 ½ short years they spent together until he passed away September 9, 1984, were the best years of her life. They enjoyed traveling between their homes in Lancaster, PA and Orlando, FL and spent their summers fishing and boating on Squam Lake in Holderness, NH.

For 32 years until she retired and married Chet, Anna served as the Registered Dietician for Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA. She graduated from Temple University and served her internship as an American Dietetic Association Dietician at the University of Maryland Hospital at a time when few women attended college. Throughout her life, she shared her love of healthy food with her friends and family by giving them recipe cards with wonderful recipes penned in her beautiful handwriting. She faithfully corresponded with her friends and family by sending thoughtful, handwritten letters and cards and never forgot a birthday. Anna loved cats, especially her precious Cindy. She did beautiful needlework and enjoyed reading, attending plays, and dining out. She relished participating in water aerobics, painting, and tai chi with her friends at The Mayflower. She always looked her best with stylish outfits, well-coiffed hair, and meticulously painted nails.

Anna was a member of the retired dieticians group in Orlando and Senior Friends in Winter Park, FL. She was a devout Presbyterian who joined the Winter Park Presbyterian Church when she moved to Winter Park. When she lived in Lancaster, PA, she was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church. Anna was active with the Women’s Circle at Winter Park Presbyterian Church. Her friends who participated with her in Caleb’s Pilgrims Senior Bible Study group at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Orlando expressed that her presence in the group was a blessing. The last words she heard before she left this world were from Proverbs, read to her from her cherished Bible.

Anna is survived by her three loving grandchildren, B.J. Bischoff (husband John Stierch) of Sonoma, CA; Bob Bischoff of Scottdale, AZ; and Debbie Miller (husband Marty) of Minnetrista, MN. She is also survived by her five great grandchildren Alexandra Bischoff, Chicago, IL; Emma Bischoff, Poughkeepsie, NY; Adam Bischoff, Winchester, MA; and Matthew Miller and Michael Miller, both of Minnetrista, MN. They will all miss their Grandma Ann.

Anna’s family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to the Cameron Group and especially Dawn Cerra-Kitt for managing Anna’s care and to Andrew Thomas from SunTrust Bank and attorney Nancy Freeman for their integrity in handling Anna’s affairs. The family will be eternally grateful to Debbie Lachman, Fazeena Paray, and Sorodjenie Varma for providing compassionate care and friendship to Anna.

Anna’s funeral will be conducted at 2 pm, Friday, October 14, 2016, at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA, followed by burial at Conestoga Memorial Park, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved Chet. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 pm, Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Winter Park Presbyterian Church, 400 S. Lakemont Ave., Winter Park, FL.
