Arnold August “Zach” Zachow, 88, of Willow Valley Manor Retirement Community, formerly of Rosemont, PA, died on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Arbor View in Lancaster, PA. He was born on August 31, 1923 in Pascagoula, MS and was the son of the late Arnold and Celeste Zachow of Gulfport, MS.
Zach served with the US Navy during World War II and was assigned to the Navy’s V-12 program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY where he studied aeronautical engineering, and was awarded both bachelors and masters degrees in engineering. After the war, Zach worked for many companies including Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, NY where he designed and tested missile systems; Module Incinerators of Philadelphia, where he designed a unique commercial waste incinerator. At General Electric in Valley Forge, Zach worked on various engineering teams focused on the space program. In addition, Zach taught Physics classes at Drexel and classes on Ancient Civilizations, Parapsychology and Astronomy in Adult Evening Classes.
After retirement, Zach and his wife traveled extensively. He had a great interest in ancient civilizations and visited many ancient cities of the world. In addition Zach researched astronomy and wrote a number of manuscripts describing the structure of the Universe. He enjoyed his most recent community of friends while residing at Willow Valley Manor Retirement Community.
Arnold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Terese (Schmidt) Zachow; two sons Robert G., husband of Sharon Zachow, and David A., husband of Annie Zachow; grandchildren Melissa Leah Zachow, Geoffrey Robert, husband of Brynne Zachow, Janethea Marie O’Reagan, wife of Paul Everitt, Kerianne Marie O’Regan, wife of Shawn Workey; step grandchildren, Gabe, husband of Melora Schaftlein, Elise, wife of Robert Tucker; great-grandchildren Kyler Worley, Levi Everitt, Ivy Schaftlein, and Emily and Brayden Tucker. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sherida Ann O’Reagan.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at the Orr Auditorium of Willow Valley Manor, 211 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service. Private interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, W. Conshohocken, PA at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent to the Willow Valley Manor Library Fund, 211 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA 17602 where books will be purchased in memory of Zach.
