Audrey J. Brinton
Audrey J. Brinton, 96, died peacefully at Brethren Village on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, where she had resided since 2004.
Born in Lancaster, PA in 1922, she was the daughter of Lucie C. (Hugle) and William Bright Cleaver.
She attended George Ross Elementary school and Stevens High for girls for half a year, before switching to the new J. P. McCaskey High School, graduating in 1940. She earned an Associate Degree from George Washington University in 1942. She married James E. Brinton in 1945, who preceded her in death in 1992. Prior to that, Audrey and Jim lovingly cared for the many flowers and gardens at their country home on Root Road, Manheim.
Audrey enjoyed reading biographies and history, sewing for her children and grandchildren, and gardening and traveling with family to many historical sites and gardens around the country. Her trip to Europe was highlighted by a visit with her French cousins in Alsace and Paris, who she had corresponded with throughout her adult life. She loved playing cards and games with many friends all her life.
She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster, where she was active in United Methodist Women, Appenzeller Society, attended and taught Sunday school and Bible study classes.
She was a member of Chapter BA of P.E.O. since 1988.
She is survived by three loving children; a son David Brinton and wife, Kathy of Lancaster; daughter Julia Lefever and husband, Gary of Annville, and daughter Deborah Elder and husband Jay of Punxsutawney. Audrey has 5 caring grandchildren; Lisa Brinton-Wilson (Dustin) of Harrisburg, Marcy Leichner (John) of Colorado Springs, Lynessa Alonso (Alex) of Germantown Hills, Illinois, Jennifer Cappella (Michael) of Media, and Brent Elder (Lauren) of Hanover, Maryland. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren: Wulff, Max, Tristan and Kai Brinton-Wilson; Cameron, Allie, and Nick Leichner; Lydia and Nate Alonso; and Luca Cappella. Also surviving are her nephew and niece, Nathaniel E. Hager, III and Sarah Hager Gross.
Besides her parents, brother (Jules Hugle) and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy C. Hager.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St. Lancaster, PA 17602 on May 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Janet Saddel officiating. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
