Benedict L. Stabile

Benedict L. Stabile, 86, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014 at Willow Valley Communities.

Ben was born in Brooklyn NY, graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a commission in the U.S. Coast Guard, and from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956, having earned a graduate Naval Engineers Degree.   He retired from the Coast Guard as a Vice Admiral after 36 years active service.

During his career he served in several District Offices and aboard five Coast Guard Cutters; as commanding officer of the CGC Mellon based in Honolulu, Hawaii; as commanding officer of the USCG Shipyard in Curtis Bay MD;  Chief of the Office of Engineering in CGHQ Washington, DC;  District Commander in Miami FL for 3 years,  which included the incident of the Mariel Boatlift from Cuba in 1980;  and lastly as Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1982 through 1986.   He was awarded several medals, including the Distinguished Service Medal twice, the Legion of Merit,  and the Meritorious Service Medal three times.  After retiring from the Coast Guard he was President of Webb Institute, a 4-year private college of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering which celebrated the Centennial Year of its founding during his time there.    He was a member of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Society of Naval Engineers, a Director of the Maritime Museum of Palm Beach, and did some collaborative work with the Center for International Policy regarding U.S. and Cuba relations.

Admiral Stabile retired to Jupiter FL for 18 years, where he was a member of Tequesta Country Club as an enthusiastic golfer and traveled extensively.   He enjoyed music throughout his life and sang in many choral groups,  most recently with the Chorale at Willow Valley Communities, where he has resided since 2007.

He is survived by Barbara (Thompson), his wife of 63 years, their 4 children — Janet Dickens of Kunkletown PA, Bennett of Peapack NJ, Gale Rothwell of Andover MA, and Roderick of Skaneateles NY — seven grandchildren, and one brother.   Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the USCG Academy, 31 Mohegan Ave, New London, CT 06320 or to Hospice and Community Care, P.O.
