BETTE K. (BRUBAKER) TONELLI

Bette K. Tonelli, 64, of East Petersburg, Pa. passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Hospice and Community Care Center after a 17 month battle with lung cancer.  Bette is survived by her loving husband of 23 yrs., Charles J. Tonelli.  She was the daughter of Dorothy K. Brubaker, Woodcrest Villa, Lancaster and the late Kenneth S. Brubaker.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by step-sons, Ronald Tonelli, Lancaster, and Nicolas Tonelli, Port Angle, PA, as well as sisters, Mary Louise Toews (Mrs. Jacob), Lancaster, and Carol Frey, Virginia Beach, VA.  She thoroughly enjoyed her role as “ Aunt B” to nieces, Lisa Toews Daugherty and Meredith Mannix Lawrence, and nephews, Karl Toews and Jamie Mannix, along with 5 grand nieces and 1 grand nephew.  All of them held a special place in her mothering heart.

Bette graduated from Hempfield High School and Elizabethtown College with an elementary teaching degree.  Her Elizabethtown College Sigma Honor House Sisters, Alice, Joanne S., Linda, Joanne A., Priscilla, Judy, Shirley, and Karen, and friend Peggy, many close neighbors and colleagues were  invaluable in assisting Chuck and her family in caring for and loving her through her illness.  The family also wants to express gratitude for the caring staffs of Dr. Degreen and Mt. Joy Hospice

Bette volunteered her time and energy through the East Petersburg Women’s Club as well as at Hamilton Elementary School, where she also taught the” Children at Risk Program” for several years.

Relating to children was her greatest joy and gift.  She was a dedicated full-time and later substitute teacher primarily in the Hempfield School District.  “Mrs. T’s” house was a welcoming place for neighbor children to enjoy treats and fun craft projects.

Her interests included a love of gardening, cooking, playing the piano and singing in school choirs, reading, and also trying her luck at Hollywood Casino.  Bette was a loving wife, daughter, sister, and friend to many.

A Celebration of Bette’s Life will be held  on Saturday, February 23, at the First Presbyterian Church on 140 East Orange Street, Lancaster, Pa. 17602 with the Rev. Dr. Donald Hackett officiating.  The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM.  Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.  Kindly omit flowers.  Memorial remembrances can be made in Bette’s name to Hospice & Community Care, P.O.Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
