Betty Darlene (Hathaway) Spencer, 82, of Willow Street, PA passed away on October 16, 2013 at Lakeside, Willow Valley. She was born in Lincoln, NE on September 15, 1931 and was the only child of the late Professor I.L. “Jack” and Pearl (Boid) Hathaway. She is survived by her husband of over 61 years, Captain Harry A. Spencer, Jr., USN (Ret.) of Spring Run, Willow Valley.
Betty graduated from Northeast High School, Lincoln, NE in 1949 and received a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1953.
Betty will always be remembered for her infectious smile. She was an active member of P.E.O., Chapter T, Arlington, VA and Chapter K, Lancaster, PA, a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and a member of the Burke United Methodist Church, Burke, VA. Betty supported her husband, Harry’s Naval career with involvement in USNA’s Class of ’52 activities and the Submarine Officer’s Wives Club. A lover of travel, a collector of antiques, dolls, and stuffed bears, Betty felt her greatest source of pride and achievement was her three children.
Betty is survived by her children, Jill S. Sundquist (John) of West Chester, PA, Dr. Harry A. “Hank” Spencer, III, DVM (Rebecca) of Marshfield, WI, and Dr. Joy H. Spencer-Fuller, DDS (Dr. Robert, DDS) of Purcellville, VA and her eight grandchildren, Amanda J. Sundquist, Esquire (Michael Mariani), Matthew J. Sundquist, CRNP (Kathleen), Harry A. “Harrison” Spencer, IV, David A. Spencer, Elizabeth L. Spencer, Holly E. Fuller, Dodd H. Fuller, and Ellen N. Fuller.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Lakeside at Willow Valley and the Asera Care Hospice team for their dedicated care. The family will receive visitors from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Friday, October 25, 2013 at Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 East Orange Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, 11:00 AM, at Spring Run Auditorium, 950 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street, PA 17584. Friends may greet the family following the service. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date.
