C. Kline Kuntz
C. Kline Kuntz, 92, of Willow Valley Retirement Community, Lancaster, PA, passed away Thursday, July 21, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Union Deposit, PA, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Martha (Kline) Kuntz.
From a very early age, he exhibited prodigious woodworking talents. His shop teacher was so impressed with his skills that he commissioned the teen-aged Kline to build cabinetry for Hershey High School before his graduation in 1940.
After graduating from Hershey Junior College in 1942, he worked in the defense industry in York, PA. before being inducted into the 106th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He soon found himself in the thick of combat during the Battle of the Bulge and served in the following occupation of Germany. After his discharge in 1945, his sister June introduced him to a friend and co-worker at Hershey Chocolate Company, Pauline “Polly” B. Kuntz.
Polly became his devoted wife for 60 years until her death at Willow Valley in January 2008. They lived for 53 years in a Cape Cod house he designed and built by hand (including furniture and cabinetry) on Cocoa Ave. in Hershey, PA.
His love of woodworking led to a position at Hershey Lumber Company, where he designed a number of homes still standing throughout Derry Township. Later, he became a partner in the Harrisburg, PA architectural firm of Bogar, Bink & Kuntz until his retirement in 1989.
After his retirement, he and Polly enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe. He also continued to hone his woodworking skills, creating everything from custom cabinetry and furniture for family members to intricate wood-turning projects such as bowls and lidded boxes.
Throughout his life, he stayed active in the church. He and Polly served as deacons for 41 years at the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren in Hershey, where he also was Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, head of several committees and leader of the Senior Fellowship. Upon retiring to Willow Valley, they became members of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren. He frequently graced church services with tender tenor solos and sang for weddings and funerals. He last sang at Willow Valley the day before he died.
He is survived by a son, Frederic K., husband of the late Ruth Kuntz of Alexandria, VA; daughters, Pamela K., wife of Robert J. Davis of Harrisburg, PA and Susan K., wife of Terry J. White of Burke, VA; five grandchildren—Steven (Sasha) Kuntz, Andrew (Kristin) Kuntz; Jonathan (Maggie) Kuntz; Claire (Stephen) Guidry-White; and Brad Davis—and seven great grandchildren—Cole, Ashley, Casie, Kaitlyn, Chase, Ryan and Henry. He was preceded in death by his sisters Esther Hoy, Mary Nisley, Martha Laudermilch, June Klucher and Evelyn Seitzinger.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service at the Jack Orr Auditorium at Willow Valley Manor, 211 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA 17602 on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at 2:00 PM. The family will greet visitors after the service followed by a time of fellowship and light refreshments.
A funeral service will then be held at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, PA, 17601 the following day on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 9:30 AM with the Rev. J. Calvin Wenger officiating. A visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will be at Spring Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Hershey, PA following the service.
