C. Richard Farmer, a lifelong resident of Lancaster, passed away quietly in his sleep on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
Richard was the son of Dr. Clarence R. Farmer and Laura Wohlsen Farmer.
Richard and his wife, Mary Suzanne Nissley Farmer, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on January 10th with a family dinner party in the Willow Valley Communities where they have resided for the past twenty years.
Richard graduated from Amherst College in 1940 and earned an M.B.A from Harvard University in 1942. He then served for four years as Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the South Atlantic and South Pacific during World War II.
He began his Armstrong career in 1946 as Plant Production Planning Manager and Purchasing Agent at the Kankakee, IL plant. Five years later, he returned to the Central Production Planning Department in Lancaster. In 1954, he began his work with Salary Administration and directed the Salary Compensation Department from 1973 until he requested early retirement in 1981.
Richard was widely recognized for his professional contributions to the complex field of merit pay. He was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Council on Compensation of the Conference Board. He was also a member of the Management Compensation Association and the American Compensation Association.
For three decades, Richard and Mary Suzanne traveled extensively to countries on all the continents except Australia.
Richard was a past president of the boards of the Lancaster County Heritage Center and the Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. He served on the boards of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, the Hearing Center of Lancaster, The Salvation Army, and the Lancaster County Historical Society. He was a director of Wohlsen Construction Company.
Richard served on the Vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
He enjoyed a lifetime “mastering” his gardening and duplicate bridge skills.
Richard was also a lifelong member of the Hamilton Club, Lancaster Country Club, the Harvard Club of New York, and the Lancaster Pirates.
Richard is remembered as a loving father and grandfather, survived by his son, Daniel N. Farmer and wife, Priscilla (Lancaster); his daughter, Suzanne F. Campbell and husband, John (Lancaster); granddaughters, Abigail Fryer (Charlotte, NC), and Amanda Fryer and Garth Henderson (Palm Beach Gardens, FL).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603 on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM with The Rev. John W. Morris and The Rev. Dr. Barbara Seras officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17602 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
