Capt. Gunvald Gundersen March 5, 1912-June 16, 2010
He was born in Arendal, Norway to Carl and Frieda Gundersen and immigrated to the United States as a young man. He lived with his family in Brooklyn, NY and in New City, NY before moving to Willow Valley North in Lancaster, PA.
Gunvald was married to Clara Tellefsen for 64 years. He was father to Gordon Gundersen (wife Nancy Omland), Nancy Wilhelmsen (husband Richard), Betty Martin (husband Raymond), Norman Gundersen, Janice Ray (husband Lamar), and Ronald Gundersen (wife Carol Feibig). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Captain Gundersen retired in 1973 after a long and distinguished career working for the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) branch of the Federal government as a ship captain and master. Among his many career accomplishments, he was recognized for his bravery and distinguished service during several rescues at sea. He also supported the exploration of Antarctica during Operation Deepfreeze in the 1950s. He was the youngest certified New York Harbor Pilot in 1938. He was involved in critical military support during WWII, the Korean War, and the Viet Nam War.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral service from Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Monday, June 21st at 2:00 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Willow Street U.C.C. Cemetery.
