Warren L. Swartz, 90, of Lady Lake, Florida, formerly of Lititz/Lancaster, PA, passed away Friday, April 23rd, at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville KY, while visiting his daughter.
Born in Lancaster, PA on August 18, 1919, he was the son of the late Oliver J. and Dorothea A. Bechtold Swartz. He was the husband of the late Emma Kathryn (Kitty) Moore Swartz.
Warren was a retired Lancaster Newspaper Executive where he had worked for 36 years. He served in World War II as a Navy Pilot and retired in 1979 as a Captain from the Naval Reserves. He served as headmaster at Peekskill Military Academy and was a graduate of Millersville University.
He was a former member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lititz, and currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church ELCA of Summerfield, Florida where he served as organist up until his final months of his life.
He served on the boards of Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Lancaster Airport Authority, Congregation Council of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church Endowment Committee and Community Chest of Lancaster. He was a member of the Hamilton Club, Pirates, Retired Officers Association, Naval Reserve Association, Reserve Officers Association, Officers Club (Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA), Institute of Management Accountants, Newspapers Purchaser Association, National Association of Accountants, Lancaster Aero Club, National Association of Flight Instructors, Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association, Silver Wings Aviation Fraternity, and Ancient & Sacred Order of Quiet Birdman- Harrisburg Hangar.
He is survived by two children: Sharon L. Butler of Louisville, KY and George P. Swartz (Shirley) of Lititz, PA; four grandchildren: Dr. Christina L. Butler-Terrell (Brandon), Carolyn M. Flener (Brad) of Louisville, KY, Jason L. Swartz and Janine E. Swartz of Lititz, PA; one great- granddaughter, Emma Marie Flener of Louisville, KY, and a sister, Marion Schneider of Williston, VT.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral service at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 West Orange Street, Lititz, PA on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Linda C. Hanus officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, May 6th, 2010 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township, PA.
