Chester W. Schoenberger, Jr.

Chester W. Schoenberger, Jr., 84, formerly of East Petersburg, a resident of Luther Acres, died Sunday, February, 22, 2015 surrounded by his family.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Chester W., Sr. and Sara Jane (Rineer) Schoenberger.  Chet graduated from East Hempfield High School in 1948 where he played soccer and basketball, but more importantly honed his outstanding musical skills.  Throughout his life, in addition to working for the former Berks Optical Company for 32 years, including time as vice president, and Albright Opticians for 20 years, as well as working part-time in retirement for Wertsch Opticians, he displayed his musical talents playing in many local bands such as the Eddie Humpf Orchestra, Malta Band, Rohrerstown Band and the Sound of Roses Band.

Chet also found time in his busy schedule to serve as a volunteer firefighter including serving as President, Deputy Chief and Chief Engineer for the East Petersburg Fire Company for 63 Years.  In 1999, he was awarded the Fire Fighter of the Year Award by the Lancaster County Fireman’s Association.

Chet was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Petersburg.  He was also a member of the East Petersburg Historical Society and Lodge #43 of the F. & A.M., but despite all of his activities, his greatest love was his family.

Chet is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary “Jane” Hertzler Schoenberger; daughters, Linda Weiss (John), Vicky Enders (James), Donna Pfautz (Douglas); a son, Donald married to Mary (Haberstroh); eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, with number ten due in June; and a step sister, Hilda Rohrer.  Chet and Jane enjoyed traveling to their grandchildren’s sporting and musical events and visiting the beach, especially Ocean City, NJ.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1925 Broad St., East Petersburg, PA.  Friends may greet the family following the service.  Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Centerville Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the East Petersburg Fire Company Memorial Fund, 6076 Pine Street, East Petersburg, PA  17520 or to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1925 Broad Street, East Petersburg, PA  17520.
