Clara Long, of Lancaster, PA, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the age 82. Born on July 5, 1932 in Youngwood, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond B. and Ivy P. (Rutter) Long.
After graduating from Youngwood High School, Youngwood, PA, Clara went on to the Westmoreland School of Nursing, Greensburg, PA, where she received a diploma in Nursing. Continuing her education at the University of Pittsburgh, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. After that, she then went on to Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, where she attained her Master of Science in Nursing. She then went on to the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., where she earned a Doctorate Degree in Nursing Science.
She spent the rest of her adult life as a College professor, having taught at the University of West Virginia, Morgantown, WV, the Jesuit College in Wheeling, WV and finally York College in York, PA where she continued to impact young lives as a teacher until she retired from the college in 1997.
Clara was a member of AdventLutheranChurch in East York, PA for over 25 years. There she was President of the Church Council, a member of the prayer team and taught numerous Sunday School classes. After moving to Lancaster in 2008, she became a member of RedeemerLutheranChurch in Lancaster, PA.
She volunteered as a nurse at the Outpatient clinic on the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona in the summer of 1970 and a mission trip to Haiti in September 1977.
She traveled extensively to many countries in Europe, Israel, Iceland and Alaska. She had many friends across the United States and in foreign countries.
In all of this the greatest love was her faith and her family.
She is survived by a sister, Ivy, wife of Willie Williams, of Lancaster, PA; three nephews, Chris, husband of Cassie Williams, of Lancaster, PA, and their son Joshua, Greg, of Landisville, PA, and his daughter Amaya, and Derek, husband of Kara O’Brien, of Ligonier, PA, and their children Mason, Bailey and Cillian; two nieces, Cathy O’Brien, of Laughlintown, PA, Courtney, wife of Colin Murray, of Pittsburgh, PA, and their sons Griffin, Tate and Teague; and a sister in law, Virginia Long, of Laughlintown, PA.
Clara was preceded in death by her two brothers, Walter Long and Raymond W. Long.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service in the sanctuary of Advent Lutheran Church, 1775 E. Market., East York, PA 17402 on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. David I. Ritterpusch, the Rev. Brenda M. Ritterpusch and the Rev. David D. Kreider officiating. Friends may greet the family the morning of the service from 9:30 to 10:45 AM. Interment will be in the Hillview Cemetery in Greensburg, PA on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM.
