World War II Veteran and Educator
David H. Thomas, 91, of Lancaster, PA died on December 6, 2014 at his home. Born in Bloomsburg, PA he was the son of the late Harold D. and Helen Rebecca Seesholtz Thomas. He was the husband of Kathryn Conrad Thomas to whom he had been married for 66 years. Prior to moving to Lancaster in 1953, he was a resident of Orangeville, Columbia County, PA.
During WW II he served in the 6
th
Army, Pacific Theater with the 38
th
Division, the “Avengers of Bataan.” He witnessed General McArthur’s return to the Philippines and the preliminary act of surrender which led to the formal end of the war.
He retired as an administrator from Pequea Valley School District where he served for 25 years, first as the principal of 7 one-room school houses then Salisbury Twp. Elementary School and Pequea Valley Intermediate School.
Mr. Thomas was active in community affairs. He was the first director of Head Start of Lancaster County, served on the board of directors for Community Action Program (CAP) and the P.I.A.A. He was active in the Salisbury Lions Club for many years where he received the distinguished Melvin Jones Award for his humanitarian service. He mentored incarcerated young men and assisted them with their transition into the community. He was also a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge # 460 F &AM.
He is survived by his children, Jeffrey D. Thomas, fiancée of Diane Coffey of Lititz, Patricia K., wife of Kent Spotts of Peach Bottom, PA, Ann D. Thomas of Lancaster, and Pamela T., wife of John Stoner; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 6 sisters. He was predeceased by 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at Church of the Apostles U.C.C., 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Kathryn Kuhn officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of service.
