Donald G. Goldstrom
Donald G. Goldstrom, 65, formerly of Lancaster, passed away Dec. 21 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., following a sudden illness.
Don was a staunch supporter of Bisbee, Ariz., as demonstrated by his participation and leadership in many area activities and organizations.
He was born in Lancaster on Feb. 29, 1948. He arrived in Arizona by way of the U.S. Air Force, training at Davis Monthan air base and later serving in Vietnam. He began his civilian career as an advertising copywriter in Phoenix. Don and his wife, Julie, first purchased a weekend retreat house in Bisbee, which became a full-time residence when he accepted employment as a Cochise County probation officer.
In Bisbee he produced and performed in numerous local theatrical productions, including skits and songs clothed in colorful surrounds. As wife Julie will attest, Don was an accomplished cook, providing entrees for numerous barbecues. A favorite specialty was “potatis corv,” a Swedish sausage, a product of his Scandinavian heritage.
Don was an accomplished athlete – a baseball pitcher at Lancaster’s Hempfield High School and later an outfielder on a top-notch fast pitch softball team while in the service.
Don was also a talented musician and a polished writer. He was a graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in journalism. It was his skill as a writer that gained favor with the judges to whom he was responsible. His reports were concise, brief and understandable. He retired earlier this year as Deputy Chief of the Cochise County Probation Department.
Don was preceded in death by his mother, Sue Goldstrom. He is survived by his father, Donald Goldstrom, of Lancaster; sister Karen, married to James Bennett, Leola; brother Mark, married to Jane Goldstrom, Baltimore; wife Julie, Bisbee; son Erik, married to Eva, and grandchildren Ethan and Juliana Goldstrom, Albuquerque, N.M.; other family members and many lifelong friends in Bisbee.
A Celebration of Life for Don will be schedule in Bisbee at a date to be announced.
