Donald G. Herr, 76, of Lancaster, died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Homestead Village.
He was the husband of the late M. Kathleen Kendig Herr who died in 2012. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Ella Grace Geist Herr.
Don was a member of the Church of the Apostles U.C.C. and a former member of the Lancaster Sertoma Club. He enjoyed woodworking and basket weaving. Earlier in his life he was also involved in the volunteer fire service. Don started his career with the Wheatland Fire Company. He spent many evenings and weekends training. His service has since inspired his son and grandson to continue this proud tradition. Later he joined the Bausman Fire Company and was a member there at the time of the merger of Wheatland and Bausman to form the Lancaster Township Fire Department. Due to chronic health problems he had to give up the firefighting job and proudly took up the role of fire police officer. In this capacity he continued until he was no longer physically able.
Don lived at home for a time and was cared for by his daughter and family. When his condition worsened, he moved to Homestead Village and it was from there that he departed this life and went to be with those who have gone before him.
Surviving is a son, Christopher A. husband of Jennifer Herr of Quarryville; a daughter, Jennifer E. wife of Francis D. Rineer III of Lancaster; six grandchildren, Anthony Sayeg, Samantha Oliver, Christopher S. Herr, Caleb Rineer, Tatiana Rineer, and Caedon Herr; and a brother Calvin E. Herr of Manheim. He was preceded in death by a brother Douglas F. Herr.
