Dorothy L. Lyet
Dorothy L. Lyet, 87, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, November 02, 2013 at Willow Valley Retirement Community. She was the loving wife of the late J. Paul Lyet, II., who passed away in 1984.
Born in Philadelphia, PA she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Jenny (Hoffman) Storz.
Following her graduation from Overbrook High School, Dotty met and later married Paul, also a Philadelphia native, and moved to Lancaster in 1945. Together they made friends and impressions far and wide, and although Paul’s business accolades were better known, they never fully eclipsed the couple’s commitment to community. Widowed in 1984, Dotty’s indefatigable support and leadership in educational, charitable causes and the Arts was legendary. A short list would include: Elizabethtown College (Honorary Degree), Lynden Hall, Lancaster Country Day, Janus School, Lancaster General Hospital, Schreiber Pediatric Clinic, Occupational Development Center, ARC of Lancaster, Homefields, YMCA, YWCA, Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster, Boys Club of America, Lancaster Day Care, Susquehanna Blind Association, Water Street Rescue Mission, Goodwill, Central Pa. Food Bank, Parish Resource Center, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lancaster Co. Conservancy, Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lancaster Historical Preservation Trust, Hourglass Foundation, Fulton Theater, Heritage Center, Demuth Foundation and the Pennsylvania College of Arts and Design.
Those who came to know her wit, unique ability to elicit the best in others and uncanny ability to simplify seemingly complex matters …were friends forever.
A devoted “downtowner”, Dotty enjoyed hosting social and fund raising events at her city residence. Her plantings were always favorites during seasonal “Garden Tours” of Lancaster.
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Lancaster.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. J. Paul Lyet (husband of Kathleen), Victor P. Lyet, and Theodore P. Lyet; and two daughters, Juliette Summy and Suzanne Ollar (wife of Peter). Also surviving are 10 grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her brother Albert Storz and sister Eleanor Culea.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Lancaster, 321 W Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603, on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with The Rev. John W. Morris officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment in Millersville Mennonite
