John Clark May, 75, of Lancaster, PA, died on June 22. A lifelong resident of Lancaster, he was married to Edith Zimmerman May. They would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on July 1. He was the son of the late George D. and Bernice C. May. A graduate of The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, John served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Ft. Belvoir, VA, where he received a Letter of Commendation for distinguished medical care. Following his service with the Army, John completed his medical training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He returned to Lancaster in 1966 where he began his career in obstetrics and gynecology.

During his nearly 40-year medical career, John, with his partner Alistair Grant, established one of the largest OB/GYN medical practices in the state of Pennsylvania. He was on the staff at both the Lancaster General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Regional Hospital, and from 1990-1994 served on the faculty of the Lancaster General Hospital Family Practice Residency Program, where he received the Award for Outstanding Teacher. In 1999, the Lancaster General Hospital awarded John the Henry S. Wentz Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Hospital, graduate medical education and the Lancaster community. John retired from medical practice in December 2005.

John was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He represented First Presbyterian Church on the board of Open Arms Christian Childcare Center. He also served as the Medical Director for Planned Parenthood of Lancaster, was a member and past Regent of the Lancaster Chapter, Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, and had served as President of the Lancaster Country Club Board of Directors.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, Bernice M. Blair, wife of David B. Blair, Washington, DC; Martha M. Barry, wife of John E. Barry, Lancaster; Barbara M. Boben, wife of William R. A. Boben III, Lancaster; Dorothy M. Markley, wife of Christopher M. Markley, Lancaster; and John C. May, Jr., husband of Nathalie D. Saget, Narberth, PA; grandchildren, David S., Edith C., John M. Blair; Caroline M., Jack E. Barry; Martha Z., Jacqueline E. Boben; Arthur M., George M. Markley; John C. III, Robert Z. May; nieces, Glenna Hazeltine, Rachel H. Gawn, Katharine May, Laura M. Davis, Caroline M. Hoffer, and nephew, George D. May III.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to the staffs at the LGH Intensive Care Unit and the Essa Flory Hospice Center for the compassionate care they provided to John and to us, as well as to the countless friends, colleagues and neighbors who gave John and us their love, prayers and support.

Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. Friends may call at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until time of service. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
