Dr. Robert L. Gutzwiller
Dr. Robert L. Gutzwiller, 93, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday February 4, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster County.
Dr. Gutzwiller was born on July 5, 1918 in Norfolk, Virginia to Erwin Charles Gutzwiller and Miriam Gryder Gutzwiller. He earned his Veterinary Medical Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Working in the new field of Artificial Insemination of dairy cattle, he was hired by the Southeastern PA Artificial Breeders Cooperative in 1943 to set up a laboratory and train their new technicians. After 3 years he started his own practice in bovine infertility, which he continued until retiring in 1988. Dr. Gutzwiller served two terms as president of Conestoga Veterinary Medical Association.
A longtime member of the Lancaster Tennis Club and the Susquehanna Yacht Club, he was an avid tennis player and sailor.
Dr. Gutzwiller is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nancy Greiner Gutzwiller; 3 sons, David L., husband of Carol Gutzwiller of Jacksonville, FL, Steven R. of Mountville, PA, Roger S., husband of Paulette Gutzwiller of Blairstown, NJ; brother James E. of Wilmington, NC; 3 step-grandchildren, Terri, Holly, and John, and one step-great granddaughter, Zoe. He was preceded in death by his older brother Erwin C.
