Dr. Winthrop Peabody Wilcox, Jr.

Dr. Winthrop Peabody Wilcox, Jr. died on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at North Naples Hospital in Naples, Florida of complications from aspiration pneumonia. He was 74.

Dr. Wilcox was born July 23, 1938 in Washington, D.C. He was the son of Dr. Winthrop P. Wilcox and Marian Bailey Wilcox. He attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, graduating in 1956. He went on to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a chemistry major in 1960.

He attended Cornell Medical College in New York City, where he met his future wife, Jane Brittain. They married on August 25, 1962. He graduated from Cornell in 1964.

Dr. Wilcox completed an internship and residency at Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. From 1966-68 he served as a captain in the United States Air Force in Sacramento, California, from which he was honorably discharged. He went on to a residency in anesthesiology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Wilcox spent the entirety of his 28-year medical career at Anesthesia Associates in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from which he retired in 1998.

For many years, Dr. Wilcox was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Lancaster, where he sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school. He was an important benefactor of the church.

In 2006 Dr. Wilcox became a permanent resident of Florida, when he and his wife settled in Naples. There he became an associate member of St. Monica’s Episcopal Church.

He is survived by Jane Wilcox, his wife of more than 50 years, who is a resident of Naples, Florida. He is also survived by two daughters and four grandchildren: Beth Wilcox Koby of Oak Hill, Virginia, who is married to Patrick Koby and their two children Amelia and Ben; and Susan Wilcox Taylor of Worthington, Ohio, who is married to Mark Taylor and their two children Drew and Maggie. In addition he is survived by his sister, Betty Hampton of Chevy Chase, Maryland, and her husband Robert Hampton.

A memorial service will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Rd., Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 17601 on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Mark L. Russell officiating.  Family will greet relatives and friends immediately following the memorial service.  Interment in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey, PA. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, at the above address.
