Edward S. Gast

Edward S. Gast, 92 of Lancaster, PA residing at Willow Valley passed away May 23, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Mary Louise Hook Gast. Born in Lancaster, PA he was the son of the late Earl M. and Mary Arnold Gast.

A decorated WWII veteran, commissioned as 2nd Lt. in the US Army Air Corps he was assigned to the 367th squadron of the 306th Heavy Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force. As lead bombardier and navigator, Ed was shot down on his ninth mission June 22, 1943 and was a Prisoner of War in Stalag Luft III for two years. He was promoted to 1st Lt. and then Capt. of the US Air Corps Reserve.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Economics from Franklin and Marshall College in June, 1948. Ed was employed with the sales division of Armstrong World Industries until the sales packaging division was sold to the Kerr Glass Mfg. Corp. where he retired as an account executive in 1983. As a resident of Berkeley Heights, NJ Ed won numerous sales awards including “Man of the Year” by the Buyers, Importers, Manufacturers and Salesmen (BIMS) servicing the toiletry, fragrances, and cosmetic industries.

Upon his retirement in 1983, Ed returned to Lancaster and served for 10 yrs. on the steering committee of Lancaster Co. Housing and Redevelopment Authority for ManorTownship. He also served for 8 years on PA. Board of the Selective Service System.

An avid golfer, Ed leaves behind a son, James E. (Dorothy) of Seaford, NY; daughter Jody L. Ruff (Brian) of Charleston, SC; sister, Gladys B. Meisenberger, brother Paul J, Four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Earl, sister Dorothy Gast Wittlinger Boas, and brother Samuel A.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Michael E. Messner as Celebrant. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Final commendation and farewell in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Gast’s memory may be made to the Disabled Veterans, 1634 “Eye” Street, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20006 or to the Wounded Warriors at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
