Edward W. McKerns, 92, died peacefully on Friday night following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Gladys Millard McKerns with whom he would have celebrated his 70th wedding anniversary on April 24th. Ed was born in Mahanoy City, PA and was the youngest of four children of John and Maria Tanner McKerns.
Ed moved to Lancaster and worked for Armstrong World Industries for 38 years, retiring as a 1st class metal mechanic. He enjoyed gardening, and long before the fitness craze, he was a tireless walker. He walked to work, to the Central Market and, after retirement, he would walk from his home to the Manor Restaurant for breakfast every morning. Ed was also an enthusiastic Notre Dame football fan, and fondly remembered trips to South Bend and bowl games. He followed several local teams as well, regularly watching the McCaskey and F&M football and basketball teams.
Ed and Gladys enjoyed traveling and visited more than 38 countries. They particularly loved Germany and Spain, often staying for several weeks and making many friends while they were there. They will be missed deeply by Janie and Manny Lanzos, who often accompanied them on their travels.
Although Ed and Gladys did not have children, they claimed Joanne (Fallan) Freund and Pat Fallan as their own, celebrating holidays and life’s milestones with them.
Ed is survived by his wife, Gladys, and several nieces and nephews. His wife wishes to thank their nieces Sue Mooney and Donna Thomason for their ongoing support. An informal memorial will be held for Ed at a later date.
