Edwin P. Short, Jr.

Edwin Purdy Short, Jr., 90, died on February 8, 2015 at Oak Leaf Manor in Millersville, PA.  Born in New York City in 1924, he was the son of the late Florence (Rae) and Edwin P. Short Sr.

After graduating from The Lawrenceville School, Ed received his B.S. in Engineering from Princeton University in 1947.  During the course of his college career, he took a leave to serve in the Navy during WWII.  Ed was a Radarman, Third Class, guiding planes safely in and out of a ground approach unit in the South Pacific.  While at Princeton, he was a proud member of the Cap and Gown Club.

As president of his own company, Purdy Engineers Inc., Ed worked as a heating and air conditioning designer.  Notable projects include the Milton Hershey School, a Marriott Resort in Orlando, and casinos in Atlantic City, NJ.  Ed was a member of the Rotary Club of Lancaster, actively involved in the Rotary International Student Exchange Program in the 1980’s.  Ed was also a loyal member of the Tucquan Club, one of the oldest social organizations of Lancastrians.  Ed enjoyed skiing, playing golf, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, flying his private 4-seater airplane, restoring Chris Craft wooden boats, and taking pictures wherever he went.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith, wife of D. Scott Haiges, and his three grandchildren, Spencer, Chad and Emma Haiges.

Ed was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, 119 North Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602, where his memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.  A visitation will take place also on Saturday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of the service.

Private interment will be in the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made in Ed’s honor to Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

The family especially wishes to thank Oak Leaf Manor and the Friendship Place staff who so lovingly cared for Ed these past four years.
