Ellen (Barber) Waldeck stepped into eternity on June 6, 2014, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Ellen was born on Jan. 31, 1947 in Cedarhurst, NY. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Frances (Andrews) Barber.
Ellen received her bachelor’s degree in English and Biology Education from Bowling Green State University (OH), where she earned many academic honors and served as president of Phi Mu sorority.
After earning a master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration at Penn State in 1970, where she worked as an Assistant Area Coordinator, she began her tenure at Millersville University as Assistant Dean of Women. In 1972, she became Assistant Dean for Resident Life. She made many significant contributions to the University, including being the first to name the swans, “Miller” and “Seville”.
She received her PhD in College Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1987, and retired from MU in 1999 at the rank of Full Professor, having served as Dean for Resident Life for 19 years.
Ellen volunteered with the Millersville Jaycettes, was an Emergency Medical Technician for the West End Ambulance Association, and was a patient advocate in the Emergency Department at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. Her favorite volunteer position was as a baby “cuddler” in the nursery at LRMC in the early 2000s.
She enjoyed reading, swimming, crosswords, embroidery, Penn State football, traveling, and communicating with her Facebook friends and pulmonary rehab partners. She especially valued her friendships with members of the Bentley Lane Book Club.
