Evelyn H. Cramer

Evelyn H. Cramer passed away peacefully on October 20, 2010 at Homestead Village. M r s . Cramer was born in Salunga, PA and was the daughter of the late Warren and Mary Heiserman. Her family moved to Landisville when she was a young girl and she made her home there until 2003 when she moved to Homestead Village in Lancaster, PA. She attended Landisville schools and graduated from East Hempfield High School. She received her BS from West Chester University and her master’s degree from Millersville University. She married Walter (Bud) Cramer at the Church of God. Mrs. Cramer was employed by the Hempfield School District for thirty years retiring in 1977. Her first job was as district music teacher and one of her proudest achievements was her production of the first musical in the district, which was “Pirates of Penzance.” She  taught 6th grade for many years as well as 7th grade English and finished her career as a Middle School guidance counselor. She also directed several student and/or faculty plays over her years in the district. She was very proud of her strong studentcentered approach to her work, taking great personal interest in her students. Mrs. Cramer served as organist and choir director at Zion Lutheran Church in Landisville for many years. After retirement from Zion, she served as choir director at The Church of God in Landisville. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Landisville. Mrs. Cramer was a long time member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American  Revolution. She loved summers at her cottage in Mt. Gretna and will be remembered fondly for her roles in among other plays “Funny Girl,” “Tillie – A Mennonite Maid” and “Papa is All.” She was an avid bridge player throughout her life and spent many enjoyable hours playing with friends. In retirement she traveled extensively until her health declined. A highlight of her later years was her appearance at the Hempfield High School Christmas Concert in December 2005 when she was asked to conduct the 375 voice combined high school and alumni choir in “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Her husband, Walter (Bud) Cramer and her eldest son, William (Bill) Cramer, predeceased her in 1965 and 1999 respectively. A devoted mother and grandmother she leaves her son, Walter (Terry) Cramer and his wife, Mary Greene as well as four grandchildren -Blanche, Rebecca, Oliver and Charles all of Marlboro, Vermont. She was extremely proud of the accomplishments of her grandchildren and cherished every opportunityto visit and talk with them. A ceremony of remembrance will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Salunga Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Cramer’s memory may be made to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604- 4125. The family is grateful to Homestead Village Apostle Center and to Hospice of Lancaster Country for the care they provided to Mrs. Cramer during her last years, particularly since her health declined the last few months.
