Gerald E. Enslen

Gerald Everet Enslen, 97, of Lancaster, PA, died on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, in Arbor View at Willow Valley Retirement Communities. He was the husband of the late Marybelle C. Enslen, who passed away on December of 2014 and the son of the late Roy E. and Alice Pearl Pfeiffer Enslen.

He was born on January 25, 1918, in Evans City, PA. Gerry graduated from Grove City College, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware. During World War II, Gerry served his country as a Lieutenant, JG, with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater. He returned to Wilmington after the war and married the love of his life, Marybelle. From then until his retirement in 1980, he worked for the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE.

During his years in Wilmington, Gerry was very active in the life of Hanover Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder and Treasurer for many years. His hobbies of fine furniture crafting and gardening began during those years. Almost 20 years ago, Gerry and Marybelle moved to the Willow Valley Retirement Community in Lancaster, where his hobbies grew to be hours spent in the woodshop or garden at Willow Valley. The two loved to travel, especially to the American and Canadian Rockies and the American Southwest. Gerry loved his family and his friends and was dearly loved in return.

He is survived by three children, a daughter, Nancy E. Mathewson (John), of Asheville, NC, and two sons, David C. Enslen (Kathy), of Prairie Village, KS, and Donald E. Enslen (Karen), of Port Republic, VA; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Pathé (John), Elisabeth Enslen, Sarah Brown (Jarred), Nathan Enslen (Jill), and Paul Mathewson; six great grandchildren, Kristen, Kaitlyn, Autumn, Ryan, Weston, and Gabrielle; a sister, Alice Jean Barron (Paul), of Grove City, PA, and many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and their spouses and children. Gerry lost one great granddaughter, Alexis, much too early.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Celebration of Gerry’s Life, in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17602, on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Dr. Donald W. Hackett officiating. Family will greet friends from Noon until the time of service. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
