Gerald “Jerry” Landis Hess, 65, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Landis Homes on May 19, 2015 following a long illness. He was the loving husband of Carol (Bare) Hess for 41 years. Born in Lancaster, PA he was the son of Norma Landis Hess of Leola, PA and the late Arthur S. Hess.
Jerry, as he was known to friends and family, was born in Lancaster, and graduated from Warwick High School. He worked in the family apple packing business for many years as a partner and co-owner of Hess Brothers Fruit Company. Jerry was an active and faithful member of Neffsville Mennonite Church. A sincere, kind, and thoughtful person, his gentle spirit was felt by those whose lives he touched. He enjoyed watching sports, snowmobiling, golf and travel.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Ryan Linder-Hess married to Maria Linder-Hess of Lancaster, and Laura King married to Zachary King of Lancaster. Gerald was greatly loved by four grandchildren, Lena Hess, Adelyn King, Avery King, and Arthur Hess. Gerald is survived by his older brother, Frederick (Jean) Hess of Lancaster; and by two sisters, Mary Ann Hess (David) Scherpf of Colorado, and Catherine Hess (Thomas) Figart of Lancaster.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 11:00 A.M at the Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA with his nephew, the Rev. F. Hunter Hess, officiating. A viewing will be held at the Neffsville Mennonite Church on Tuesday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. There will be no viewing on Wednesday morning prior to the service. However, friends may greet the family at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Landis Valley Mennonite Cemetery.
