Gloria M. Ashby

Gloria Marie (Mayer) Ashby passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Luther Acres, Lititz PA, where she resided for nine years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard James Ashby, Sr. of 67 years. Gloria was born in Lancaster PA on September 16, 1923, the daughter of Paul and Marie Carpenter Mayer. She was a graduate of McCaskey High School. During WWII she worked at Hamilton Watch Co., contributing to the war effort. She was later employed for many years by Lancaster County United Way. After her retirement, Gloria enjoyed volunteering for her church, Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster, the Lancaster County Public Library, and Lititz Welcome Center. Her many enjoyments in life included traveling, taking walks, listening to music, and reading.

She is survived by her two children, Richard J. Ashby, Jr. of Lititz, PA, and Carol A. Wolpert, married to Rev. Dr. Harry L. Wolpert of Berlin, MD. The joy of her life was her five grandchildren, Douglas R. Ashby, Allentown PA, Elizabeth Hyatt, Sylmar CA, Brian J. Ashby, Philadelphia PA, Nathaniel D. Wolpert, Springfield VA, and Amy E. Wolpert, Baltimore MD. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Madeline S. Ashby, Madelyn G. Wolpert, and Jackson G. Wolpert.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 517 N. Queen St. Lancaster, PA 17602 on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 7:30 PM. Guests are invited to remain after the service to visit with the family and enjoy coffee and dessert in the church Narthex. A private graveside service will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Gloria’s name may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church at the address listed above.
