Gurley Mae Manners

Gurley Mae Himes Manners, 96, a resident of Homestead Village, Lancaster, Pa., died Sunday, April 24, after a weekend surrounded by family and loved ones.

She was born in Dagus Mines, Pa., the daughter of the late Anges J. and Robert Myrrh Himes. In addition to her parents and sister, Ruth Rindosh, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Manners, and a grandson, Timothy C. Manners.

She is survived by her daughter, Melodee A. Titus, and her fiancé, Terry Hassay, of Youngstown, OH.; her son, Charles R. (Chuck) Manners, and his wife, Beth, of Lancaster; grandchildren Charles J. and Kathryn J. Manners, of Lancaster; her son, Timothy L. Manners, and his wife, Norma, of Humble, Tx., and grandchildren Conner and Leah Manners and step-grandchildren Victor Perez and Toni Elias, all of Humble. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends whom she cherished.

Gurley graduated from Brockway Area High School and attended Case Western Reserve University, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She taught art in Pennsylvania schools for approximately 20 years.  She also displayed her art work in various locations and shows, was a member of the Oil City Art Council and painted a dozen large murals.  She had a lifelong interest in art and writing and enjoyed sharing her talent throughout her life.

She participated in a range of organizations in the communities in which she lived, including the YWCA, ADK teaching sorority, Belle Lettres, Ladies Golf Association, P.E.O. and was a member of Eastern Star for over 60 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brookville for many years and later a member of First Presbyterian Church in Oil City.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Homestead Village community, and especially the staff of the Apostle’s Care Center, for the friendships, support and care Gurley enjoyed. Gurley wished that any memorial contributions be directed to the United Disabilities Services Foundation or the Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, both in Lancaster.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. in the Glassford Room at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, PA with Chaplain David Longenecker officiating. Friends may call at Homestead Village on Saturday from 10:30 A.M. until the time of the service.  Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in Temple Cemetery, Hazens, PA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to United Disabilities, 1901 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, PA 17601 or to Schreiber Pediatrics, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, PA  17603.
