Harold Earl Bechtold, 95, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2013 at Doctor’s Community Hospital in Lanham, MD.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents Abner M. and Florence E. (Brodhecker) Bechtold, his son Jeffery David Bechtold, his sister Mildred Stover, his brother Paul Bechtold, his sister Janet Suydam, and his sister Darlene Kilgus Spece.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred (Rineer), by his daughter Sue Groff and her husband Rick of Bowie MD, by his sister Mary Snyder and her husband Ray of Lancaster, PA, and by his daughter-in-law Karen Bechtold of Millersville, PA. He is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Scott Bechtold and his wife Kara of Newville, PA and their children Peyton, Lily, Victoria and William; Stacey Bechtold Farris and her husband Tom of Lancaster, PA and their daughter Paige; David Groff and his wife Bridget of Charlottesville, VA and their sons Lucas and Derrick Harold; Steven Groff and his wife Allyson of Fairfax, VA and their son Owen; and Melanie Groff of Bowie, MD.
Harold was born in Lancaster, PA on September 1, 1917 and was a lifelong member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. He worked as an accountant at Armstrong World Industries from 1935 until December 1981, when he retired after a 47 year career. This career was interrupted for several years while he served his country during WWII. Harold was an Army Technical Sergeant in the Division Services Company for the Second Armored Division and was involved in campaigns in the North African and European theaters. Harold was an avid horticulturist and owned and operated The Bechtold Tree Nursery on Schoolhouse Rd. in Lancaster.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 500 Pearl St., Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive family and friends from 10:00 AM until time of service. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harold’s memory to Redeemer Lutheran Church. Home
