Harold “Harry” J. Lawrence, Jr. who was under Hospice care, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at Landis Homes with his brother, Jerry, by his side.
Born in Plymouth, PA on April 7, 1928, he was the son of the late Harold J. and Sallie (Swinski) Lawrence. Harry is survived by two siblings; a sister, Shirley R., wife of the late Edward Stevens, of Lady Lake, FL, and a brother, Gerald R., husband of Lorna Lawrence, of Lancaster, PA; along with two nephews, four nieces, and their children.
At the age of four his family moved to Huntington (Watertown), PA to a farm, where he spent twelve years. There he attended a one room school house from grades 1-8. At the school he took care of the stove and earned $25 per school year. From there he attended Huntington Mills High School, later transferring to Hanover Township High School for his senior year. After Graduation he attended Bucknell University achieving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry.
Harry’s first major employer was Merk & Company as a chemist. Soon after that he received a direct commission as Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict.
Once out of the military Harold settled in New York City, where he lived for 18 years. There he was first hired by Allied Chemical as a Market Research Analyst. Later he joined Pepsi Cola International as an International Financial Manager. Subsequently, he was transferred and lived in Montreal, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Later Harry returned to the New York City office, traveling to at least 50 countries while working for Pepsi.
In 1985, Harry retired from Pepsi Cola International and moved to Lancaster, PA where he had family and friends. It was not long however until he returned to work. He and his brother, Jerry searched for a company to buy. They purchased a small oil distributor in Manheim, PA. They renamed the company Lancaster Lubricants and relocated to Manheim Pike in Lancaster. Finally in 1995 he retired for good.
Harold was a 40 year “friend of Bill W.,” founder of the Twelve Step Program and A.A. He benefitted greatly from the program and encouraged others to participate as well.
Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Rd., Lancaster, PA, 17601, on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Mark L. Russell officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Garden at the church following the service. Family will greet friends following the interment.
