Harry Robert Frey

Harry Robert Frey passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Homestead Village Retirement Community, Lancaster, PA in his eightieth year, following a long illness with Parkinson’s disease. He was married to Beryl Catherine Frey for forty nine years.

Born October 24, 1932 in Millersville, PA, Harry was the son of the late John Henry and Ruth Parmer Frey. He attended the Penn Manor School District in Lancaster and graduated from Titusville High School in Titusville, Pennsylvania. He then went on to study at Penn State University, where he graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1959. He then pursued a long and illustrious career in the field of research and development, specifically with the television and color picture tube division at RCA, where he was the holder of numerous patents. He continued this field of endeavor working for General Electric and then later for Thompson Electric in a career that spanned forty years.

Not one to be idle in retirement, Harry became the co-owner, with his wife, of the Ephrata Self-Service Laundromat during the 1990’s.

Harry had many and varied interests throughout his lifetime as evidenced by his earning a pilot’s license in the 1970’s and being a longstanding member of the Century Flying Club. He held membership in the Lancaster University Club and was a Life Member of the Elks Club of Lancaster. For many years, he enjoyed membership in three local dance clubs, most recently the Couples Dance Club and before that participated in both the Unwind and the Caper Dance Clubs.

When his boys were growing up, he was a Cub Scout Leader for 11 years. His civic involvement also included serving as a Lancaster Township auditor in the 1980’s and 90’s.

His being a wine enthusiast further evidenced Harry’s versatility, and for many years he enjoyed making his own wine and sharing it with friends. Though quiet and unassuming by nature, Harry had the respect and companionship of many friends, whom he enjoyed entertaining in his backyard with his grilling skills or partnering with at the bridge table. His wit and dry sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife Beryl, Harry is survived by two sons, Brian, husband of Patricia of Morristown, NJ and Randolph, husband of Viviane of São Paulo, Brazil. His grandchildren Emily Anne Frey and Evan Scott Frey also survive. Other survivors include his brother Glenn, husband of Beverly of Albuquerque, NM and sister Loretta Frey Bloomquist, wife of Jack of Syracuse, NY.
