Helen Grace (Moore) Hacker passed away peacefully at Trillium Place in Lancaster on October 29,2024 a quiet ending to a 97-year story that exemplified faith, kindness, and appreciation for family, friends, and caregivers.
Helen was the daughter of James Warren Moore and Elsie (Diem) Moore. She was born on February 6,1927 in Salisbury Township and grew up on a farm in Springville, Lancaster County. Helen attended a one-room schoolhouse through eighth grade and graduated from New Holland High School. Afterward, she moved to Lancaster City and worked as a clerk at Oblender’s Furniture Store. There, she met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Hacker.
She and Dick were married in Bel Air, Maryland in 1951 and eventually built a house in Manheim Township. Helen juggled duties as a housewife and mother with work as Chief Clerk at PennDOT and in administrative positions at the Lancaster Livestock Reporter; Lancaster Newspapers; J.L. Clark; and the Lancaster County Courthouse. In her early 80’s, she finally retired. At 97, her wish to ride on a motorcycle was granted by kind individual and club bikers who paraded her around Long’s Park.
Helen enjoyed playing golf with Dick, singing in the church choir, and playing bridge. She and Dick also volunteered with “Meals on Wheels” and were active members of Ross Street United Methodist Church. Throughout her years, she supported her family with love, made friends easily, and never skipped an opportunity to offer help or say “thank you” to the people she met – always with a smile. She was known for her beautiful smile and positive, pleasant demeanor. Helen and her family appreciated the care she received from staff at Trillium Place.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Hacker, sister, Ruth Henderson, and her daughter Helen Ann. She is survived by sons Richard J. Hacker (Nina George-Hacker), Cornwall, PA and Michael C. Hacker (Marisa Chancellor), Los Altos, CA; daughter Kris M. Hacker, East Petersburg, PA; and granddaughters Courtney Hacker Jesensky (Johnny), Falls Church, VA and Allison K. Hacker (Devin Rothman), Nevada City, CA.
