Herbert Kready Kraybill
Herbert Kready Kraybill of Lititz, departed this life on Saturday, March 24 with his wife of 63 years by his side. His death was due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 89 years old. Born in Lancaster, PA on April 24, 1922, he was the son of Amos Lehman Kraybill and Mabel Kready Kraybill. He was a lifelong and active member of Salem United Church of Christ, Rohrerstown, PA.
He attended Lancaster city schools and was graduated from Franklin and Marshall Academy in 1940, before enrolling at the Pennsylvania State University. As an undergraduate he was president of Kappa Sigma fraternity, freshman president of Penn State Christian Association, a member of Friars honorary society, and participated in junior varsity football and freshman and varsity tennis. He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946, holding the rank of ensign as a naval aviator. After returning to Penn
State, he earned a BA degree in psychology in 1947.
Herb’s first employment was as a “market boy”, using his express wagon to carry shoppers’ purchases. Later he “stood market” in Lancaster and Lebanon with the Stoner family. He also delivered Lancaster newspapers. Upon graduation from Penn State he was employed by Pennwoven, Inc. in Lock Haven and New York City until 1950. After returning to Lancaster County, he served as district manager for Ohio National Life Insurance Company. From 1962 to 1973, he served as associate director of the United
Way of Lancaster County. His last and most fulfilling employment was as Director of Development at Hershey Medical Center from 1973 until his retirement in 1987, where he coordinated private fund efforts, including annual giving, special and deferred gifts. While at Hershey he was instrumental in helping the Millard family establish the Four Diamonds Fund and worked with Penn State students on their annual dance marathon both of which raise funds for cancer research and treatment of children with cancer.
After moving to Lititz in 1955, he was a member and past president of the Lititz chapter of the American Business Clubs, a volunteer ambulance driver, former director of the Lititz Community Center and served as chairman of the Community Center building fund drive in 1960.
He enjoyed playing baseball as a boy, coaching his sons in midget baseball, watching the NY Yankees and Penn State football. He was particularly appreciative of being able to continue a lifetime of tennis playing into his 80’s, until being incapacitated by illness.
In his retirement Herb and his wife Nancy, enjoyed traveling and attending over 40 elderhostels across the country and abroad. They also were able to attend many concerts and sporting events in which their grandchildren participated.
Herb was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Edward Kready Kraybill, Elizabeth Kraybill Preston and Wilbur Kready Kraybill. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Mast Kraybill, son Stephen Mast Kraybill, Leola, husband of Bonnie Barker Kraybill; son Douglas Alan Kraybill, New Holland, husband of Barbara Lemishko Bellitto Kraybill; daughter Nancy Kraybill Sabb, Elizabethtown; daughter Katherine Kraybill Szydlo, Northfield, Minnesota, wife of William J. Szydlo; and the following grandchildren: Ben, Jaime, Zak, Jasmine, Dashia and Andre Kraybill, Michael Sabb, Daniel, Caleb and Eli Szydlo, Charles and Christina Bellitto and Angelo Matthews.
A memorial service will be held at Salem United Church of Christ, Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Avenue on Saturday, April 14 at 11 AM, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Salem United Church of Christ, Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603; the Four Diamonds Fund, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, 500 University Drive, Hershey, PA 17033; or the United Way of Lancaster County, 630 Janet Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601.
