Herbert “Claire” Werner, of 211 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, was welcomed into the Lord’s loving arms on January 23rd, his 83rd birthday.

Born in Willow Street, he was the son of the late Paul G. and Mary Sangery Werner and married 58 years to Blanche Shenk Werner of Sporting Hill, Manheim.

He was enrolled in NROTC during WWII and attended F&M and Princeton, finishing his education at Millersville Teachers’ College.

Herb was employed by RCA for 36 years, retiring in 1986. The majority of his work focused on glass fabrication and cost reduction. While employed at RCA, he was honored with the Man of The Year award, owned several patents, and received a team Oscar for his work on a special camera tube which was later used aboard the moon landing explorations. After his retirement, he was actively involved with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, the Parsomore Golf Club and the Homeowners’ Association of Willow Valley Estates.

He was a member of the former Lancaster Exchange Club and faithfully attended Willow Street UCC where he was an Elder, a life-long member of the church choir, and served on several committees, including 18 years as chairman of the church Ham and Oyster Supper. He was the President of the Consistory from 2006 – 2007.

For 15 years he chaired the Suburban Sewer Authority and the West Lampeter Planning Commission, and encouraged the development of a park system as early as 1972 during his tenure.

As president of the Willow Street Lions Club, he received the Lion of the Year award in 1995-1996 and the Melvin Jones Fellow award in 1997. His activities in the Club included being the one that always made the gravy for the annual Turkey Supper.

An avid woodworker, golfer, and a handyman who had the reputation of being able to fix anything for his family and friends, he also enjoyed cooking and prepared many Mother/Daughter banquet meals. Throughout his life he enjoyed the competition of bridge, and loved playing with friends across Lancaster County.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche, and two sons, Herbert C. Werner, Jr. married to Deborah Heisey Werner of Lititz; and Kevin D. Werner married to Cherylann Poplar Werner of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Sarah, Jared, Laura, Elizabeth, and Rebecca; two sisters, Betty Aston of Willow Street, Arlene Holbein of Millersville, and a brother Harold of Willow Street. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Werner Eckman of Carlisle, and a brother Paul Werner, Jr. of Willow Street.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 11AM at Willow Street United Church of Christ, 2723 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service.
