Ih-Cheo Yang

Ih-Cheo Yang, 95, of Lancaster, PA entered into the joy of eternal life on Monday, August 14, following his beloved wife, Harriet C. Yang, who entered prior to him in 2010.

Born in Amoy (Xiamen)  China on September 15, 1921, he was a graduate of the University of Nanking before emigrating to the U.S. in 1949 for a fellowship with Seagram’s. While working on a master’s degree at the University of Montana (Bozeman), he learned to play bridge (his lifelong hobby) and quickly emerged as a formidable force, defeating the Montana State Champions in a match with his bridge partner.

For over 30 years, Ih-Cheo worked as a chemical engineer for Allied Chemical, primarily in Morristown, NJ. Following retirement, he continued sharing his engineering wisdom and experience as a consultant with The People’s Republic of China through a program set up by the United Nations.

Both he and his wife Harriet were deeply influenced by the Mary Leaman family (missionaries to China) whose presence in Paradise, PA was a haven of hospitality for many Chinese graduate students in the 1950s. They married in the Leaman home (now the location of Ambassadors for Christ) and poured out their lives in a similarly sacrificial way, providing support to many younger relatives who emigrated to the U.S. Although their life journey took them to New Jersey and Florida, they returned to Lancaster in 2006.

Amidst his brilliance and many accomplishments, Ih-Cheo was a quiet and servanthearted man, gaining the most pleasure from saving his resources so that he could lavishly provide for others. He was the epitome of contentment and always grateful for God’s many blessings, including enjoying a large bowl of ice cream with his grandchildren.

His absence is keenly felt by many, but most especially by his biggest fans who include: son Thomas J. Yang of Stevens Point, WI (and wife Jenni and daughters Olivia and Megan); son Robert E. Yang of Cherry Hill, NJ (and wife Jessie); daughter Rila Yang Hackett of Lancaster, PA (and husband Don and children Ian, Brynn, and Colin); family members who live all over the U.S., Canada, China, and the Philippines; and the welcoming and encouraging community at Willow Valley Manor North.

The Memorial Service will be held in Johnson Auditorium of Willow Valley Manor NORTH (600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA 17602) on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2pm. The family will greet after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Ambassadors for Christ, Inc., 21 Ambassador Drive, Paradise, PA 17562.
