J. Albert Seldomridge, 81, of Lancaster, died at Landis Homes on Saturday, June 12, 2010 of complications due to Parkinson’s Disease.
Al was the husband of Shirley Warner Seldomridge, with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage on March 21.
Born in New Holland on March 16, 1929, he was the son of the late Paul W. and Estella Keckler Seldomridge.
He was a 1947 graduate of McCaskey High School. He attended Franklin and Marshall College and graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1952, followed by graduate work at Drexel and Penn State Universities.
Throughout school and college years, he played soccer and tennis and was active in government, yearbook, and music. Further, he was the President of the Student Body at Elizabethtown College.
Al was an accomplished pianist and sang in church choirs. He served on the Vestry at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Haddonfield, NJ, and Christ Lutheran Church, Elizabethtown. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, having served in many capacities including Trustee, Chairman of the Property Committee, and Social Ministry Committee member.
Al’s community involvement included Lancaster Northeast Rotary Club- President and Paul Harris Fellow; board member of Neighborhood Services; Elizabethtown College Alumni Trustee, President of Alumni Association and recipient of Educate for Service Award; Manheim Township Civil Service Commissioner; Associated Builders and Contractors; and board member of Gretna Theater.
Following college, Al went to work for the Campbell Soup Company, advancing to Assistant Manager of Government Sales. He then served as Director of Development for Elizabethtown College. For many years, Al was a manufacturers’ representative selling folding walls, partitions, and office furniture through his business, J. A. Seldomridge and Associates. He also worked in commercial real estate sales.
Al enjoyed travel, piano, tennis, bridge, home repairs, and spending time with family.
In addition to his wife, Al is survived by his children, Gary Warner Seldomridge (Christina Newkirk) of Lancaster, Suzanne Cresswell (Thomas) of West Chester, and Judy Kitsock (Geoffrey) of Lancaster; grandchildren: Elizabeth and Kevin Cresswell, Tyler and Benjamin Seldomridge, John and Carolyn Kitsock; brother, Kenneth K. Seldomridge (Dorothy Landis), of Lancaster.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Landis Homes for the grace-filled care they provided as well as the prayers and support offered by many people who knew Al.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 29, at 1:30 P.M., at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, PA 17602. Family will greet visitors in the parish house following the service.
