Jack S. Gerhart

Jack S. Gerhart, of Lancaster, died on August 19, 2014 at Hospice & Community Care.

He was 88 years of age, the son of Sherman N. Gerhart and Catherine Scherer Gerhart.  He and his wife, Bernice Krentz Gerhart, celebrated 66 years of marriage this past year.

Surviving is one son James M. Gerhart and wife Nancy F. of Lancaster, Margaret L. Gerhart of Lititz and Kathryn A. Gerhart wife of George J. Essif of Lancaster.  Also surviving are 5 grand-daughters; Becky L. Gerhart, Columbus, OH,  Jamie L. , wife of Travis Williams, Baltimore, MD,  Megan L. McDonald, Lancaster, PA,  Keely M. McDonald, Paris, France and Darcy L. McDonald, Baltimore, MD.  He was preceded in death by a brother Sherman L. Gerhart and by a sister Minerva U. Neiss

Jack served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 on a destroyer and mine-sweeper in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

He retired from Lancaster Newspapers in 1990 as Vice President and Secretary and member of the Board of Directors.  His responsibilities included, Steinman Holdings, Inc., Lancaster Farming, Inc., Lancaster County Weeklies, Inc., Intelligencer Printing Co., Delmarva Broadcasting Co., and Steinman Park Restaurant, Inc.  He also served as President and CEO of the Steinman Management Co. and trustee of J. F. Steinman and James Hale Steinman Foundation.

He was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School and Lancaster Business College.  He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and past Council member.

He was a member of Conestoga Country Club and past member of the Hamilton Club, Sertoma Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation.  He was past treasurer of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, past treasurer of the American Red Cross, Lancaster Chapter and past member of the Board of Directors of Lancaster Meals – On- Wheels.

Also, he was past President of Lancaster Chapter of Institute of Management Accountants, Member of the Board of Directors of Institute of Newspaper Controllers and the Pennsylvania Economy League.

Jack and his wife were in the antique business for 20 years under the name The Country Look.

He was a long-time supporter of Lancaster Farmland Trust and its preservation of our beautiful Lancaster County farms.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service.  Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to  Lancaster Farmland Trust, 125 Lancaster Ave., Strasburg, PA 17579.
