Jacqueline Davis Nickel
Jackie Davis Nickel passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015 in her 90
th
year. She was born October, 6, 1924 in Holmsburg, PA (Philadelphia area) to the late Ethel Straley Dougherty and Gerald Dougherty and Charles W. Lowrey (Ethel’s second husband and childhood sweetheart). She was married to the late George C. Davis Sr. who passed away in 1991. She is survived by George W. Nickel, Jr., with whom they would have celebrated 20 years of marriage this year.
She lived in West Oak Lane and graduated from Germantown High. While there, Jackie joined a national Sorority, Alpha Phi Theta and has kept in touch with her six Sorority sisters for over 70 years. She attended Temple University (secretarial) and University of Pennsylvania and Stenotype Institute. She was very active in the WWII effort, was a USO Hostess, in the Navy League, volunteered at the Women’s Medical Hospital and worked for a well-known advertising company, Arndt, Preston, Chapin and Keene, Inc., as an executive until her marriage to George Davis in 1954. They lived in Hatboro, PA and she was very active in volunteer work, Cub scouts, Girl Scouts, Heart Association, Gray Lady at Abington Memorial Hospital and various school activities as her children were growing up. After her husband transferred to Lancaster, PA in 1974 she lived in Manheim Township. There she joined Highland Presbyterian Church, was a Red Cross volunteer at Lancaster General Hospital, Welcome Wagon East and Coterie (35 year Member). She worked at Daffin Mobile Products as a secretary to the plant manager. She became a Welcome Wagon Hostess and was named “Hostess of the Year” in 1989. They moved to Valleybrook Estates in 1987 after her first husband retired. She worked in the Valleybrook office and became the social director. She was active in the Fulton Opera House Guild becoming president of the Guild in 1994. She always had a love of music and sang in the church choirs, a Gilbert and Sullivan group for six years and in the AARP Chorus where she was a member for about 17 years (performing in several concerts a year at retirement homes and nursing facilities). It is there that she met her present husband Judge George W. Nickel, Jr., marrying him in 1995. She and George have been very active in the community. They had attended 17 Elderhostel’s enjoy playing Bridge and Pinochle.
She loved her families and friends and kept in touch with all of them. She loved to write letters, cards and stories, and has written her life story and is an organizer of all things. They retired to Brethren Village (Fieldcrest East) in June 2010 to a lovely apartment and enjoyed the friends and activities there.
In addition to her husband she will be lovingly missed by her son, George C. Davis, Jr., (Wendy) of Virginia and daughters Cathy Davis Testerman (Keith), of Millersville, and Susan Davis Saxton (Bob), of Leola, grandchildren George C. Davis, III, Bobby Kruleski, Ryan Kruleski, Chelsie Testerman Weber (James), Derek Testerman, Lisa Saxton and great grandchildren, Brooklynne, Sabrina and Julian.
Stepchildren, George W. Nickel III (Aileen), of Lititz, Nancy Groff, Radnor (Sandford), Susan VanCleve (John) of Pittsburgh, grandchildren David Nickel (Florence), Josh Nickel (Lynsey), Sanford, Spencer and Susan Groff and great grandchildren Alex, Adele, Nohealani.
She is also survived by her sister-in-laws, Catherine Lowrey and Dorothy Bills.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Robert Lowrey and Richard Lowrey.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service in Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 East Roseville Road, Lancaster, PA, 17601 on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Family will greet friends at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Highland Presbyterian Church Memorial Gardens.
