James A. Mackenzie

James A. MacKenzie, 81, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Maple Farm Nursing Center. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late James B. and Carolyn Anderson MacKenzie. He was the loving husband of Susan Landis MacKenzie for 55 years.

Jim was a good, honest man and a generous soul who was always willing to help out when called upon. His friends called him, “Mac.” Mac’s friends and family knew they could always count on him to lend a hand. Jim was known for his dry sense of humor and for delivering zingers at the perfect moment with a knowing grin.

He knew how to build a house from the ground up and shared his construction knowledge and skills by volunteering for church mission trips and for Habitat for Humanity.

A diehard Phillies and Eagles fan, Jim possessed a superhuman laser-like focus whenever he was watching a game. He also liked to play ball and coached his kids’ little league games.

Jim was a dedicated educator. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Millersville University. He spent the first 10 years of his career as a math teacher in the Conestoga Valley School District. He joined the Guidance Department at Garden Spot High School where he remained for 28 years. Jim genuinely cared for his students and truly enjoyed helping them navigate the challenges of high school and finding their paths in life.

But most of all, Jim loved his family and we loved him. We will miss him dearly.

Surviving along with his wife are a daughter; Carol MacKenzie of Ardmore, PA, son; James A. Jr. (Kacy) MacKenzie of Lititz, PA, three grandchildren; Elizabeth, Nicholas, and Sheridan, a brother; Dr. Charles (Cathie) MacKenzie of Oxford, PA, and many nieces and nephews.

Our family is filled with gratitude for the compassionate and loving care Jim received from the staff at Maple Farm Nursing Center and from Hospice and Community Care.

Friends and family are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, 29 E Walnut St, Lancaster, PA 17602 at 11:00 AM with the Rev.
