James E. Short passed away on October 31st at the age of 85.
Jim was born in Georgetown, Delaware to parents Lizzie and Herman in 1931. He graduated from Georgetown High School and soon after met the love of his life Shirley Joseph. Jim served in the U.S. Navy where he graduated from the Naval Mine Warfare School in Yorktown, Virginia and was stationed at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Although this was at the height of the Korean War, the only real action Jim saw was during his time bartending at the Officer’s Club pool. Shirley was fortunate enough to join her husband in Hawaii while he served out his enlistment.
The couple moved back stateside and settled again in Delaware where Jim began his lengthy career in department store management. He retired as the general manager of the Bon-Ton store after 33 years of service. Following his retirement, Jim began a new career with the Manheim Auto Auction Arbitration department that spanned 15 years.
Jim is survived by his wife Shirley with whom he recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Also surviving are sons James E. Short II, husband of Sharon, Cary, NC and Jeffrey K. Short, husband of Sarah, Millersville, PA along with grandsons Benjamin Short, Jeremy Short, Daniel Short, Stephen Short and great granddaughter Gemma Short.
Jim was a music lover who truly enjoyed listening to classic country, rock, classical orchestral from the 18th and 19th century and most of all mountain and bluegrass music. He passed on his love of music to his family.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
