James M. Hebel, Jr.

James M. Hebel, Jr., 76, of Lancaster, died Friday, February 6, 2015 at Homestead Village from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

He was the husband of Wanda Weiser Hebel.  In March they would have celebrated 54 years of marriage.  Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late James M., Sr., and Evelyn Long Hebel.

Jim retired from P.P.& L. where he had been employed as an electrical engineer for 34 years.  He was a graduate of the John Harris High School, received an Associate’s Degree from Montgomery Junior College and received his Professional Engineering Degree from Penn State.

Jim was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster.  He was a lifetime member of the Red Rose Coin Club, serving as President in 1984 and 1990 and a member of the Lamberton Lodge #476 F.& A.M.

Surviving besides his wife is a daughter, Dr. Jeanette L. Hebel of Lancaster; two sons, James W. husband of Katherine Hebel of Sinking Spring, and Jonathan S. husband of Angela Hebel of Lakewood, CO; six grandchildren, Andrew, Jessica, and Evan Hebel, Christopher Matthews, and Juliana and Willow Hebel; and a sister, Joan Genf of Marcellus, NY.

Almost every year of his life he was surrounded by family during sumer vacations in Stone Harbor, NJ.  He loved crabbing off of the docks for hours on end or walking the Point finding conch shells that others missed.  Jim had a witty sense of humor and loved to keep those around him off balance and forever smiling. He was an avid fan of country music, NASCAR, ice hockey and jigsaw puzzles.

Jim had participated the past few years in a research study at Hershey Medical Center for Parkinson’s headed by Dr. Xuemei Huang in the hope that it would benefit people in the years to come.  The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Huang and her staff at Hershey Medical Center in addition to the staff of the Apostle’s Center for Care at Homestead Village for the extraordinary attention and care given to Jim over the last two years.
