James R. Green

James R. Green, 78, a resident of St. Anne’s Home, died peacefully Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the home.

He was married 54 years to Eleanor Hertsch Green. Born in Taunton, MA he was the son of the late Erastus and Blanche Minnich Green.

Surviving besides his wife is a daughter, Allyson G. wife of Joseph Mowery of Lancaster; a son, Kendal W. husband of Paula Thompson Green of Slippery Rock; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Green.

A graduate of West Chester State Teachers College, he taught junior high/middle school music in the Penn Manor School District and was a choir director in several churches. James composed and had published anthems for church choirs and bell choirs. He gave voice lessons, with one student going on to perform regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in NY. James was active with Lancaster Opera Workshop and Actor’s Company, acting, directing, doing set, costume, lighting design and numerous special effects.

He started a traveling drama troupe called Caravan Players to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through plays presented at churches. Feeling a further call, he left his teaching positions to return to school, graduating in the first class of recipients of the Master of Arts in Religion degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary.

James began working as a consultant running workshops in churches focusing on how to use all the arts (music, drama, graphic arts, literature, etc.) to enrich the lives and missions of the participants.

In 1977, he was the victim of a traffic accident, being struck as a pedestrian. After a long stay at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster, and then New Jersey Rehabilitation Hospital in East Orange, NJ, he went to the Center for Comprehensive Services in Carbondale, IL. There he was given therapy for the extensive brain injury from the accident. He returned home and was able to join the church choir and bell choir for several years before the lingering effects of the accident made that too difficult and eventually made it necessary for him to move to St. Anne’s.

Well done good and faithful servant, rest in peace.
