Jane Logdon
Jane Logdon, age 82 of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Good Friday surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 5, 1930 in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey to the late J.D. (Rube) and Marian Ryerson. Left to cherish her memory is her husband George; daughters Diane (David) Heinmiller, Columbus, Ohio and Kim (Randy) Albright, Mechanicsburg, Pa; brother Bill (Suzanne) Ryerson; grandchildren Stephanie, Matthew (Jamie), Michael (Abbey), and Megan; great grandchildren Connor, Annabelle, and Jadon; sister-in-law Elizabeth McKay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jane graduated from Butler High School in Butler, New Jersey in 1947 and from Cornell University in 1951. She married and moved to Lancaster where she and George remained and celebrated over 61 years of marriage. Jane embraced life and was very active in neighborhood activities and community organizations. She was widely known for her support of the Lancaster Public Library through her involvement with the Annual Book sale. Beginning in 1958, Jane spent over 50 years volunteering in support of the book sale, which was founded by the Lancaster Branch of the American Association of University Women and later taken over by The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library. When she wasn’t acting as the chairman or treasurer at the spring or fall sales, she was recruiting sellers, sorting books, or researching book values and working with the Friends Pricing Committee to determine which books were rare and collectible and how to price them. Ultimately, she worked almost daily on behalf of the library, which honored her for her support. She also received the Lancaster New Era Red Rose Award in recognition of her work.
As an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Jane worked on numerous committees and served in many leadership roles, including president. Her contributions were instrumental in the success of many of the organization’s fundraising endeavors, including Holly Trail, an annual tour of Lancaster homes decorated for the holiday season. In 1990 she was named by AAUW as Woman of the Year for over thirty years of dedication to the organization.
Jane’s love of literature, history, and the arts was evidenced by her decades long membership in The Art Class, where she took great pleasure in sharing camaraderie, research, and book reviews on topics of interest to the group. She joined in 1975, and last year, when she became an honorary member, was the longest standing member of the organization. She was warmly acknowledged when she attended her last meeting in November 2012.
As a gardener who also appreciated floral design, Jane was a member of Lancaster Town and Country Garden club. With a keen eye for composition, she received many awards for her flower arrangements at the club’s flower shows. She was a devoted bridge player and belonged to multiple bridge clubs, often playing several times a week. She was also an avid reader, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and word games of any kind.
Talented in both knitting and stitchery, Jane made beautiful sweaters and wall hangings. Her skills inspired her to teach both knitting and stitchery at a local craft shop for several years. She enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and also had a special fondness for Rockport, Rhode Island, where she delighted in whale-watching, viewing Thatcher Lighthouse, crawling over the huge rocks, and eating treats from Helmut’s Strudel.
Jane deeply cherished her time with her family and her wonderful and caring friends. They were her greatest treasures in life, and they, in turn, treasured her. She will be sorely missed by many.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA. Friends may greet the family at the church on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park, 95 Second Lock Road, Lancaster, PA on Saturday morning at 10:00 A.M.
