Jane M. Schultz, 87, of 1402 Hollywood Dr., Lancaster, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at home. Born in Clarks Summit, she was the daughter of the late Harry G. and Erie Eber Murphy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William R. Schultz, who died in April of 2007. Also, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Dayton and Grace Baas.
Survivors include their children: a son, Ned W. husband of Laura Schultz of Los Osos, CA; a daughter, Amy J. Schultz, wife of Robert Sherfy of Lancaster; a daughter, Wendy S. wife of Alan Wubbels of Williamsburg, VA; a son, Mark H. husband of Maureen Schultz of West Deptford, NJ; and a son, Bart R. Schultz of Richmond, VA. Her grandchildren include: Derek and Anna Schultz; Hannah and Elizabeth Schneider; Kurt husband of Karen, Eric, Peter husband of Michelle and Jane Wubbels; Sarah, Evan and Hayden Schultz; and two great-grandchildren, Graham and Audrey Wubbels.
A graduate of Clarks Summit High School, Jane earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the Pennsylvania State University in 1943, where she served as the first woman editor of The Daily Collegian. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Following graduation, she worked as a reporter in Williamsport, PA. She was hired to the staff of the public relations department at Keystone College in La Plume, PA, where she taught journalism courses. After marrying in 1948, she worked on the Centre Daily Times in State College and later, she and her husband edited the Wyoming County News in Tunkhannock, PA. In 1951, they moved to Lancaster, where her husband joined the Lancaster Newspapers and later became editor of the Intell. She was a mother and homemaker and worked for a time for the Manheim Twp. School District in public relations.
For 60 years, Jane belonged to Grandview United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities. She and her husband edited the church newsletter for more than 20 years. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Grandview Singers, and the Ruth Circle.
She was an active community volunteer donating time to such organizations as the Blind Association, Hospice of Lancaster County, where she and her husband were honored as volunteers of the year, the Arch Street Center, HarbAdult, Lancaster County Council of Churches, and the Boehm’s Chapel Society. Together, Jane and Bill Schultz helped to produce newsletters for many local non-profit organizations and for ten summers she and her husband co-hosted a course about newspapers in the Elderhostel program at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville.
A memorial service will be held at Grandview United Methodist Church, 888 Pleasure Rd., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 11 AM with the Rev. Andrea Brown and the Rev. Michael Alleman officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, April 17th, from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Private interment will be held in the memorial gardens at Grandview Church. The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to either Hospice of Lancaster County, P.O.
