Jean Y. Smith, 81, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2012 at Mennonite Home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was the wife of Paul K. Smith. Born in Mt. Braddock, PA, she was the daughter of the late William and Dora Conrad. She moved to Columbia County Village of Lightstreet, PA as a young girl. She attended schools in Espy, PA and played an E flat clarinet in the high school band. She married Paul in the Lightstreet Lutheran Church in 1950 and they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012.
She began married life in Bloomsburg, PA and worked at Magee Carpet Co. She then moved to East Orange, NJ to live with her parents while her husband, Paul served in the military. After his discharge, they moved to Lancaster in 1954. Jean worked 23 years with the IU 13 as a teacher’s aide, retiring in 1994. She volunteered with her husband, son, and daughter in law supervising the Pine Street Club for neighborhood children, sponsored by Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Her interests included growing flowers, vegetable gardening, reading, short car trips to Historical sites, and wildlife viewing at Middlecreek Preserve and at Cape May, NJ. Her special interest was spending time with her grandchildren, and more recently, her two great-great children.
In addition to her husband Paul, she is survived by her son, Timothy and his wife, Betty Ann Smith of Landisville, PA; two grandsons, Matthew and his wife Adrian Smith of Downingtown, PA and Jeffrey Smith, and his fiancé Lauren Petroski of Mt. Joy, PA; two great grandchildren, Joshua and Lillian Smith of Downingtown, PA (children of Matthew and Adrian); and a sister, Kathryn, wife of David H. Thomas of Lancaster, PA; three nieces and one nephew of Lancaster County. She was preceded in death by a brother, William and a sister Mildred.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral service from Emmanuel Lutheran Church, corner of Walnut and Pine Streets, Lancaster, PA on Friday, May 4th at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Kurt S. Strause officiating. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Thursday, May 3rd, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. and on Friday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of service.
