(1942-2020)

Jerry Benowitz was born and raised in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He was a member of the Oxford Circle Mennonite Church and the Norristown Mennonite Church (Lancaster Mennonite Conference).   He spent his childhood summers in Berks and Lancaster Counties attending the Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown and the New Holland Mennonite Church in New Holland Pennsylvania.  In the 1950s, he attended Lancaster Mennonite High School, class of 1960, where he was a member of the New Danville Mennonite Church.  In the 1960s, he served with Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions in New York City. During this time, he was a student at New York University and a research laboratory assistant at the New York University School of Medicine.  He was a member of the Seventh Street Mennonite Church and St. Ann’s Mennonite Church (Lancaster Mennonite Conference) before transferring membership to the House of Friendship Mennonite Church (Atlantic Coast Mennonite Conference) in the Bronx.  In 1964, he married Charlotte Pierantoni of the Bronx, New York City, at the House of Friendship Mennonite Church.  While Jerry was studying and working at NYU, Charlotte was a student at the Montefiore School of Nursing in Mount Vernon, New York.  Along with other Mennonites serving in Voluntary Service, Jerry started a private hire car company in the Bronx and for forty-five years was employed by the Rockland Coaches, Inc. in Westwood, New Jersey. Jerry was active in the local ministries of the Grace Conservative Baptist Church, particularly leadership in the Christian Service Brigade and Men’s Softball Team, of Nanuet, New York in Rockland County, where he lived for forty-six years in Chestnut Ridge (formerly Monsey) New York.  In 2014, he moved to the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.  He was a member of the Elizabethtown Mennonite Church.  He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years Charlotte P. Benowitz of Elizabethtown.  He is survived by his son Jean-Paul Benowitz and daughter-in-law Amy Lynn (Mango) Benowitz of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his daughter Althea Marie (Benowitz) Lazar, son-in-law Larry Ira Lazar, grandson Ryan Henry Lazar, and granddaughter Heather Danielle Lazar of Delray Beach, Florida.  He was predeceased by his father Meyers Benowitz, his mother Bella (Bender) Benowitz, his sister  Ruth (Brody) Cohen, brother–in-law Sidney Cohen, nephew Howard Alan Cohen, sister-in-law Marcia (Benowitz) Brzezinski, and brother Irvin Benowitz; father-in-law Charles Augustus Pierantoni, mother-in-law Mary (Penalver) Pierantoni, brother-in-laws Charles A. Pierantoni, William Pierantoni, Daniel Pierantoni and sister-in-law Elaine (Zimmerman) Pierantoni, sister-in-law Stephanie (Pierantoni) Beck and brother–in-law Barry Paul Beck, nephew Edward Charles Vogt, sister-in-law Judith A. (Goldner) Pierantoni.  He is survived by his brother-in-law Louis Nelson Pierantoni and sister-in-law Arlene (Eshelmen) Pierantoni of Harmon, West Virginia; brother-in-law Ronald Pierantoni and sister-in-law Anna Mary (Coblentz) Pierantoni of Harrisonburg, Virginia; brother-in-law Gary Pierantoni of Atlantic Beach, New York; sister-in-law Marsha (Pierantoni) Vogt, brother-in-law Edward Richard Vogt of New City, New York; brother-in-law Ernest P. Brzezinski, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, sister-in-law Bedelia A. (Pastrana) Pierantoni, Charlotte, North Carolina, and several generations of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Services are being held privately.
