Joan E. “Sandy” McCollom entered into rest on November 2, 2012 at her home in East Hempfield Twp. She was married to Herbert McCollom, Jr. for over 56 years.
She was born in Hanover, Pennsylvania December 13, 1931 to the late John and Maude Fleming and graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1949. She then majored in art education at the Pennsylvania State University where she received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. It was at Penn State that she acquired the nickname, Sandy. She was employed by the Elizabethtown Area School District as their elementary art teacher for six years visiting many one-room schools operating at the time.
Sandy felt that parenting was a full-time task and was home with her two sons until 1977 at which time she was welcomed into her husband’s audiology practice – Hearing Services of Lancaster – for the next quarter century as the office manager until they both retired in 2002.
She is survived by her husband, her son, Geoffrey Scott, his wife Lori and their daughter, Jenna as well as by her son, Mark, his wife Beth, and their children Alexander and Grace.
She also intended that Karen McCollom and her daughters, Michelle and Nicole, as well as their husbands, Pahn Sisay and Robert Graybill remain as family as well as their children, Olivia Sisay, Isabella Sisay, and Erik and Emma Graybill.
Sandy loved camping early in her marriage, but that faded when a love of travel and keeping up with the lives of her extended family replaced the solitude of the trail. Failing health did not dampen her love of all in the extended family. Her final wishes were to give them all a hug.
There will be a private viewing for immediate and extended family prior to a funeral service to be held at the Richard A. Sheetz Funeral Home 2024 Marietta Ave. Lancaster. Friends are respectfully invited to attend the service on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 11 AM and visit with the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sandy’s memory can be made to Hospice and Community Care, P.O. Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604 or to the Hanover Public Library 301 Carlisle St. Hanover, PA 17331.
