Lancaster

Joan Y. Shand passed away at the Glen, Willow Valley, on February 14, 2024, age 96. She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Margaret Yochum, and grew up in Quakertown, Pa.

She graduated from Penn Nursing of the University of Pennsylvania nursing school. As a nurse at Penn she treated the painter Beatrice Turner, who painted several portraits of her that are displayed at Turner exhibits.

She had two sons, James and David Flores, by her first marriage, to Dr. Alberto Flores, which ended in divorce.

In 1977 she married James Shand, with whom she lived until his death in 2006. She was an avid golfer and tennis player and a longtime member of the Lancaster Country Club and the Country Club of North Carolina. She also enjoyed travel and went on numerous trips all over the world.

She is survived by her son, James, husband of Sara, of Savannah, Ga., their 3 daughters and husbands and 3 great-grandchildren; her son David, husband of Kathy, of Lancaster; a stepson Douglas Shand and his wife Suzanne. Her older brother Philip and a stepson James Shand Jr. predeceased her. Many thanks are due to the staff at Willow Valley Glen, her many friends at Spring Run Willow Valley who helped her, and to Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster who treated Joan and made her last days a comfort. Her funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a long-standing member, or to Hospice.
